About Me
Tan Jie Ni (b. 2001, Johor Bahru, Malaysia) is a Malaysia-based visual artist working across oil painting, printmaking, and installation. Her practice explores the relationship between memory, body perception, and emotional labor, reflecting on how personal and cultural histories shape identity.
Artist Statement
My art is inspired by my personal experiences, including family traditions and cultural values. I focus on small, quiet forces in daily life that affect how we grow and who we become. The body is an important part of my work—sometimes I look at parts of myself I can’t normally see, or I show how repeated work can make us feel emotionally distant.
I use soft colors, meaningful objects, and familiar materials to create feelings that are both close and distant. My work explores the thin line between care and control, freedom and expectations, especially in family and social life.
